After a While was written in 1992. I had seen the poem while visiting a job counselor's office. I was in a difficult transition both professionally and personally and found, in setting these words to music, a way to help work through the situations. Ms. Shoffstall kindly gave me permission to use her text.

The setting is a reflective waltz, contrasting with a middle section in modulated chorale style for the piano and a soaring melody for soprano, the reprise returns with a waltz and brief coda.
